NYPS Bags 4 Top Medals @ 69th NSICC 2017

On 21 and 22 March 2017, 57 Nanyang pupils took part in the 69th National Schools Individual Chess Championships (Our Tampines Hub), a gruelling two-day event gathering more than 1,200 pupils from 162 primary schools, secondary schools and junior colleges. Overall in the national rankings our NYPS Chess Club members have won three national champion titles: Lauren Rice (4L) – Junior Girls, Aleenta Quek (2H) – Lower Junior Girls, and Ethan Poh (6N) – Senior Boys. Our players have also won a bronze medal (Ng Sheng Feng, 5K, Senior Boys), seven top-10 positions and many West Zone top prizes. Noteworthy facts: Aleenta Quek won her national title with a 100% score (9/9), a rarity in top scholastic chess competitions; Giselle Ong (1G) deserves a special mention for her sportsmanship. NYPS Chess Club wishes to congratulate all our players and thank all parents, parent-volunteers, teachers and other school staff involved with this competition.

Congratulations to Ethan Poh!

Two Nanyang Chess Club members (and one NYPS Alumni) were selected by the SCF to take part in Viswanathan Anand’s 50-board simultaneous exhibition at the Overseas Family School on 11 March 2017 (Ethan Poh and Ng Sheng Feng). After a gruelling session lasting nearly six hours, Ethan Poh was one of the only two players to score a victory against the five-time World Champion. Our chess club member was featured in this Straits Times report. Congratulations to all our players (and spectators) involved in this special event.
